Most people don’t choose their careers; their careers happen to them.
You fall into a role because it feels safe, follow promotions because they are expected, and work incredibly hard to meet standards you didn’t set. One day, you look around and realise that while your life looks impressive on paper, it feels hollow.
This isn’t a sign of failure; it’s a sign of disconnection.
The Architecture of Disconnection
When we make career moves based solely on what is available, what pays the bills, or what looks good on a résumé, we are building from the "Outside In". In coaching, we call this building from the Crust.
The Crust is the outer identity that performs well and follows the rules. It gets the rewards, but it comes at a cost. Underneath that Crust often lies the Crud: old stories and beliefs that keep us small, such as "Work is about security, not fulfilment" or "I can’t afford to start again".
If your identity is tied only to your title, you will always feel uncertain. You become capable but unsure, respected but restless.
The Alternative: Building from the Core
Your Core is the quiet voice underneath the noise—the part of you that holds your values, natural gifts, and deepest longings.
Building a career from your Core doesn't mean you quit everything tomorrow. It means you stop outsourcing your decisions to fear or external pressure. It’s the shift from reacting to your career to actually leading it.
When you align your work with this internal architecture, success stops feeling empty and starts feeling like growth. You move from being merely functional to being truly energised.
The Signs of an Identity Shift
You might be operating from the Crust if:
You feel like you’re "just getting through the week".
You’ve outgrown your role but feel guilty for wanting more.
You’ve built success that looks good but doesn’t feel good.
As Tony Robbins once said, "Success without fulfilment is the ultimate failure". If you recognize these signals, something in you is simply ready for more truth.
Actionable Steps: Auditing Your Core
Instead of asking external questions like "What job should I apply for?", start by going inward. To begin designing your path from alignment, sit with these three questions this week:
1. What am I no longer available for? Identify the boundaries you are ready to set regarding your time, energy, and values.
2. What environments actually bring out the best in me? Move beyond your job description and look at the "where" and "how" of your work.
3. If I stopped performing and started leading, what would I choose? Imagine a version of your career built to honour your values rather than impress others.
From Impressive to Authentic
You don’t need to know the exact path yet. You just need to be honest about what is no longer working.
What becomes possible in your career if you stop trying to be impressive and start choosing to be authentic?. That is where your real career begins—at the Core.
